iTunes and Facebook Music Sampler

Posted by walter | July 28th, 2006 | 7:26 pm

iTunes and Facebook have teamed up to provide free “back-to-school” music samplers. The good news is this works for any member of Facebook including alumni (muahaha). New samplers will be released weekly.

All you’ve gotta do is join the Apple Students group and click on the add at the top of the group page. It’ll then message you a code to use in iTunes (when you’re in the music store, look for the “Redeem” link part way down the left side of the page) that’ll let you down the 25 songs for the week.

It appears this promotion will be going through the end of September.

The sampler for this week, “Alternative,” includes songs from The Early November, Cartel, My American Heart, Grandaddy, 30 Seconds to Mars, and more. See the full list at the Apple Students group on Facebook.

Summer Samplers: Download This Trend

Posted by walter | July 19th, 2006 | 12:44 am

I’m attempting to make this a comprehensive list of all the free compilation EPs I run across this summer. So far it includes 8 EPs from 10 labels featuring over 100 different artists across several genres including punk, indie, emo, screamo, rock, and pop. The most recent additions/updates are marked with an asterisk (*) at the front of the line.

Epitaph Records has released the Epitaph Summer Sampler at PureVolume. Go download it now.

Fueled by Ramen & Decaydance have their “Summer Audio Sampler” for download at PureVolume. Features artists heard on this podcast including This Providence and Punchline and other artists such as Panic! At the Disco, Paramore, and others.

Fearless Records has teamed up w/ AbsolutePunk.net for exclusive download of their Summer Sampler. Features Gatsby’s American Dream, Plain White T’s, Portugal. The Man, and more.

Fat Wreck Chords has released the Fat Wreck Chords Sampler 2006. The entire sampler is available for download. Features Against Me!, NOFX, and others.

Immortal Records has released a seven-song Summer Sampler in conjunection with AbsolutePunk.net. Go get it.

* Inpop Records has released a 12 song digital EP titled “iPOP 2006.” Inpop is a label made up of Christian artists such as Mat Kearney, Paul Coleman, and Tree63.

* Suburban Home Records has released the “Suburban Home and Friends Summer 2006 Sampler.” It features 18 songs from 17 bands you’ve probably never heard of. From what I’ve listened to so far, it’s got some decent indie rock songs.

* Tooth & Nail Records and Solid State Records have released a digital sampler: One Dark Summer. It’s available for download at PureVolume (you need a free listener account to download). The EP has been updated to include 32 songs.

Getting Over It

Posted by walter | July 12th, 2006 | 12:10 am

The newest Over It song, Gunslinger, is currently streaming on Walter’s Myspace profile. Scroll down on the left side of that page and hit the “Play” button.

(Of course, you could just listen to it on Over It’s profile, but then how would I get you to come to mine?)

Microsoft’s iPod Competitor

Microsoft's
Microsoft’s iPod Competitor – code named “Argo” (via Engadget)

If this is supposed to be an iPod killer, I think Microsoft is going to fail. Granted, this isn’t the final product yet, but this device looks completely unsexy. If the only difference is being locked into Microsoft’s DRM instead of Apple’s, I don’t think it will sell well.

At this time, the rumoured advantages over the iPod would be wifi capability and perhaps a large screen. Not bad benefits, but not enough to sway my spending.
